Building a Bright Future: Desiree’s FSS Success Story
Lancaster City Housing Authority’s Family Self Sufficiency (FSS) Program is helping residents build skills, confidence, and long-term stability. Through personalized coaching, goal setting, and financial incentives, participants gain the tools to increase their earnings, reduce reliance on assistance, and create a path toward career growth and homeownership.
Our FSS Program Manager recently spoke with Desiree, a program participant who recently earned her real estate license with support from the FSS Program. Below, she shares what the journey has been like, and what it means for her family’s future.

Q: What was the most challenging part of preparing for the real estate exam while balancing other responsibilities?
A: The most challenging part was learning how to prioritize my studies while being a busy mom. Managing my time between family, daily responsibilities, and coursework was difficult, but it taught me discipline and determination.
Q: What does earning your real estate license mean for you and your family’s future?
A: Earning my real estate license represents more than just a career change—it means financial freedom and stability for my family. It’s an opportunity to build something I never had growing up: peace of mind and security for the future.
Q: What advice would you give to someone considering going back to school or pursuing a professional license through FSS?
A: Don’t limit yourself. So often we get stuck thinking about the “what-ifs” instead of focusing on what we can do right now. Take the step, put in the work, and believe in your ability to succeed. You are capable of more than you think.
The FSS Program is designed to support residents as they set goals, build financial independence, and create brighter futures for themselves and their families. Learn more about the FSS Program, how it works, and eligibility requirements by visiting the Family Self Sufficiency Program webpage.
